Matthias Pruksch will speak on the embedded world 2012 on “Scalability, granularity, decoupling - Lessons learned for successful multi-core software”

Listen to our speaker Matthias Pruksch on Wednesday the 29.02.2012 from 9 AM to 9:30 AM.

Abstract:

Due to the "power wall", there is no alternative to multi-core. In order to benefit from progress in hardware, software development faces a paradigm change to parallelism.
The impact is even more important, since life-cycle of software is much longer than that of hardware: investments in software last for decades. To utilize the full potential of multi-core systems, software architects should have a closer look on:

  • scalability, to keep the increasing number of cores busy,
  • granularity, to minimize overhead and
  • decoupling, since for most current multi-core implementations communication is more expensive than calculation.

For illustration of the lessons learned from successful multi-core software projects, examples are presented, which and how design decisions contribute.
